Projects

Subprogram: Marker development and implementation

This sub-program will deliver new sugarcane varieties from a more efficient and effective breeding program that uses modern DNA biotechnology techniques.

The benchmark for measuring the impact of the techniques will be improvements over current rates of variety production and genetic gain in released varieties.

Subprogram Leader: Dr Phil Jackson, CSIRO Plant Industry

Subprogram: Environmental sustainability

This subprogram is expected to address the major environmental issues of the Australian sugar industry. The target outcomes are reduced pesticide residues, biocontrol of pests and improved nitrogen use and management. The projects that make up this subprogram are commercially focused and aim to develop critical technologies for crop management and improvement. Many are performed in collaboration with a commercial partner and so have a solid platform to launch resulting IP.

Subprogram Leader: Dr Prakash Lakshmanan, BSES Limited
